Screwtape: Chapter 8

The "Woes" of Having Free Will...

Chapter 8
TL;DR

In Chapter 8, Screwtape describes the cycle of going through spiritual highs and lows—what he calls "the law of undulation." He says that humans, because they exist as temporal beings with souls, naturally go through emotional and spiritual cycles, and how God often uses the low points (or "dry spells") to help believers grow in maturity and faith.

During these low times, Screwtape warns that God is often silent—not because He's absent, but because He wants the person to choose obedience without emotional reward. (Note: This is not always true. Remember, Screwtape is demon who lies.)

Screwtape is frustrated by how these dry seasons will sometimes make Christians stronger rather than weaker. The chapter highlights how spiritual growth almost always happens when we trust God even when He feels far away.

"Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him." —James 1:12

Discussion Questions

  1. Screwtape says we naturally go through spiritual highs and lows because we live in both the spiritual and time-bound world. Does that idea sound relatable to you? How have you seen that cycle in your own faith journey?
  2. Why do you think God often reaches us more deeply in our low points than in our high points? Why is that a threat to the demons, according to Screwtape?
  3. Why do you think Screwtape is so annoyed that God purposely created humans with free will?
