Screwtape: Chapter 9

It's darkest in the dark...

Chapter 9
TL;DR

In Chapter 9, Screwtape explains how demons can exploit the Patient’s “trough” (or spiritually low period) by tempting him into sins of the flesh, such as laziness, lust, or overindulgence. He points out that low times make people more vulnerable to seeking comfort or coping in unhealthy ways.

Screwtape warns Wormwood not to let the Patient turn his suffering toward God, since that could lead to humility and deeper faith. Instead, he encourages using boredom, dissatisfaction, and shallow pleasures to keep the Patient stuck in sin.

Chapter 9 shows us how spiritual dryness can either draw us closer to God in dependence on Him—or push us toward habits that turn us away from Him.

"I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure." —Psalm 40:1-2

Discussion Questions

  1. Why do you think temptations like lust or addictive habits feel stronger when our spiritual lives feel dry or empty?
  2. How does the enemy take good pleasures God has created and twist them? How can we better recognize when this is happening?
  3. If we can’t escape spiritual low points by our own willpower, how can we find freedom and light again?
  4. Screwtape says confusing words and slogans are more effective against faith than clear truth or reason. Why do you think that works so well?
