Who created God? Where did God come from?

Have you ever wondered where God came from? Like, was there another God who created Him or has He always just been the only One? We could sit and ponder all day, but if we want a definitive answer, we can turn to the Bible.

The Bible tells us that nothing and no one came before God. God has no creator and came from nowhere because He has always just...been. Isaiah 40:28 says, “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.” The Bible is pretty clear on the issue!

What the Skeptics Say

Many unbelieving skeptics (AKA atheists) believe that God does not exist because they say “nothing can come out of nothing.” They take the stance that if there is a God, then there has to be a cause behind God. And if something or someone created God, then God isn’t really God at all. Does your head hurt yet? (Mine does.)

When people start questioning the cause or beginning of God, they will not find an answer, because God has always existed. He wasn’t created by anyone nor was He the result of a creation or cause. Nobody created God and He didn’t “come from somewhere.” God has always been and will always be. God never changes. He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow (Hebrews 13:8). God Himself is the Creator. He created everything—from the farthest stars in the universe all the way to uniquely-designed YOU (Genesis 1:27). Isn’t that amazing?!

God always has been, always will be.

If we take the viewpoint that “nothing comes from nothing,” then we wouldn’t even be here today. Since we are in existence today, it stands to reason that a "something" did come before everything else. The Bible reveals right in Genesis 1:1 that this "something" is the one and only God—the creator of everything.

As Paul says in 1 Timothy 1:17, God is “the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God.” You see? God is eternal and immortal, which means that He has always existed and always will.

God Creates from Nothing

In the first couple chapters of Genesis, we see that God can create something out of nothing—and He's the only one who can do that. Why? How? Because He's God! Nothing is too hard for Him. God knows no limits.

Jesus tells us, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” (Revelation 22:13). God is the One who brought everything into existence. What a glorious Creator we have!

TL;DR

God is an eternal Being—not created by anything or anyone. God did not “come from somewhere” because God has always existed and always will (Isaiah 40:28). God is eternal and immortal, evidence that He has always existed (1 Timothy 1:17). There was never a time when God was not in existence because He has always been. God created everything out of nothing—from burning, faraway stars to uniquely-designed YOU (Genesis 1:27)!
