There's a lot of confusion as to who the Holy Spirit is. The simplest answer is: The Holy Spirit is God. Our God is one divine being, yet He is also three unique individuals. There is God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19). The Holy Spirit is the third person in what has been understood as "the Trinity," a triune God.
Many wonder if He's a person, a spirit, or something else. The Holy Spirit is a personal being. He's not an "it" but is mostly referred to as "He" (never as a female). He has a mind, emotions, and a will. He also possesses the same traits as God, which is seen throughout Scripture.
The Holy Spirit knows us thoroughly and knows the depths of God (1 Corinthians 2:10). The Holy Spirit is saddened by our sinful actions (Ephesians 4:30). The Holy Spirit is truly the Comforter and Counselor whom Jesus promised He would be (John 14:16, 26, 15:26).
"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you." —John 14:16-17
The Holy Spirit comes to reside within a person when they accept Jesus Christ as their Savior, believe Jesus died and rose again for the forgiveness of their sins, and recognize Him as the only way to have eternal life and get into Heaven (John 3:16, John 14:6). The Holy Spirit was sent as a helper for mankind in the place of Jesus after He physically left the earth (John 15:26, 16:7). The Holy Spirit is described as our advocate (John 14:26, John 15:26), who prays and intercedes for us (Romans 8:26-27) and reminds us of what He has heard from Jesus (John 16:14). He is the One who gives spiritual gifts to every believer (1 Corinthians 12:7-11).
The Holy Spirit convicts us of our sin (John 16:8), guides us away from evil and toward righteousness (John 16:13). He brings Scriptures to mind when we need them as our sword (John 14:26; Ephesians 6:17). The Holy Spirit is always with us (John 14:16) and seals us as God's possessions until the "Day of Redemption" (2 Corinthians 1:22, Ephesians 1:13-14).
The Holy Spirit was present and active at creation (Genesis 1:2, 1:26), and He glorifies Jesus (John 16:14).
The Holy Spirit dwells in every believer and is your source of strength when your faith feels weak (Ephesians 3:16). He is the One who can help you choose a godly life when faced with temptations and produce godly character, which is the "Fruit of the Spirit" (Galatians 5:22-23), when faced with trials.
The closer you allow yourself to get to God, the more you'll experience His Holy Spirit. How amazing that we have God in us wherever we are and will always have a divine Friend to help us face anything we come up against. The Holy Spirit is a precious gift to every believer, and He is One who should be treated the same as we treat God the Father or Jesus Christ the Son, as He is equal with them, but unique in the role He plays in our lives.
We can't do anything in our own strength to carry out God's will and purposes for our lives, so God sent the Holy Spirit to be with us always (John 15:26, 16:7; John 14:16). The Holy Spirit helps us (John 16:8), convicts us (John 16:8), guides us (John 16:13), and reminds us of God's Word (John 14:26; Ephesians 6:17). The Holy Spirit acts as a seal upon our souls, marking us as God's possessions until the "Day of Redemption" (2 Corinthians 1:22, Ephesians 1:13-14). Because of the Holy Spirit's power and strength, we can do anything God wants us to accomplish in life and learn to live righteously (Ephesians 3:16; Galatians 5:22-23).
