“In that day the wolf and the lamb will live together; the leopard will lie down with the baby goat. The calf and the yearling will be safe with the lion, and a little child will lead them all.”
While the Bible has plenty of clear-cut teaching on many questions we can think of, the question of whether or not our pets will be waiting for us in Heaven is unfortunately one that is not so apparent. But we can take what the Bible is clear on to add some clarity while we tackle this question.
The Breath of Life
“To every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.”
In the creation story, God says that both humans (Genesis 2:7) and animals (Genesis 1:30; 6:17; 7:15; 22) have the "breath of life." That means that both humans and animals are living beings. The difference between the two arises in Genesis 1:27: "So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created Him; male and female He created them."
This is one of those times when the Bible is very clear. All humanity is created in the image of God. In a nutshell, that means that we have, in essence, a soul, which is a spiritual being that will continue after death. If animals also have a soul that will live on, it's likely a different kind or lesser quality because they're not made in the image of God.
God Cares for His Creation
“What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it.”
God created animals before the fall and declared that they were good (Genesis 1:25). Jesus points out that our Heavenly Father know when even a sparrow dies (Matthew 10:29). Isaiah's prophecies state that there will be animals in the millennial kingdom (Isaiah 11:6, 65:25). And Revelation describes a new earth at the end of time (Revelation 21:1), which leads us to believe that there'll probably be animals in the new earth too.
This brings us around to the original question, "Will I see my beloved pet in Heaven?"
Sadly, the Bible is silent on this specific answer, but this much is true: God's immaculate sovereignty and His will far surpasses anything you or I can imagine (Isaiah 55:9). I know that whether our beloved animals will be there in Heaven, His decisions are always best. For now, we can enjoy our pets as a blessing on Earth and be grateful for these wonderful furry friends we can share our lives with today.
