Can a Christian commit the unforgivable sin?

"I tell you the truth, all sin and blasphemy can be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. This is a sin with eternal consequences." —Mark 3:28-29 (NLT)

In Matthew 12:31-32 and Mark 3:28-29, Jesus revealed that the one sin God will not forgive is "blasphemy against the Holy Spirit." At the time, religious leaders were claiming that Jesus performed miracles under the power of Satan. This is the sin Jesus was talking about.

In truth, the miracles were empowered by the Holy Spirit. So the religious leaders were essentially disrespecting God by attributing His work to the devil. Jesus' miracles were God's testimony that everything Jesus said was true and from God Himself.

Understanding the Gospel

"When [the Spirit] comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God's righteousness, and of the coming judgment. The world's sin is that it refuses to believe in me." —John 16:8-9 (NLT)

This is the gospel—the good news of what Jesus has accomplished for us. The gospel reveals God's great love for us and His plan to rescue us from sin and spiritual death (John 3:16-17). The gospel shows us that our worth comes from God, our purpose is to glorify Him, and our future is secure in Jesus.

Today, the unforgivable sin is simply to reject this gospel for one's entire life.

Christians & the Unforgivable Sin

Now that you know the definition of the gospel and the unforgivable sin, let's go back to the original question: Can a Christian commit the unforgivable sin?

Nope. The definition of a Christian is someone who recognized their sin, accepted that sin was bad, and asked Jesus to forgive them. If you've asked Jesus for forgiveness, then you've already accepted the gospel. If God has already forgiven you, then you can't die having never asked Jesus for forgiveness.

Christians cannot reject Jesus after they have accepted Him. The Holy Spirit seals us at the moment of salvation (Ephesians 1:13; Ephesians 4:30), which means we have been securely marked and identified as God's own for eternity. Our eternal security is guarded by God's power (1 Peter 1:5), and therefore absolutely safe. Nothing can take believers from the Father's hand (John 10:29)—including our own fickle beliefs and doubts.

"I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me, for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else. No one can snatch them from the Father's hand." —John 10:28-29 (NLT)

Christians can't commit the unforgivable sin because they've already been forgiven. There is nothing a believer can do to lose salvation (Romans 8:38-39).

TL;DR

The unforgivable sin is just that: the sin God will not forgive (Mark 3:28-29). It's blasphemy, which means ignoring the Holy Spirit's warning of coming judgment and rejecting the gospel of Jesus Christ up until the moment of death (John 16:8-11). Believers have already accepted the gospel, so they cannot commit the unforgivable sin.
